Zuellig Levonorgestrel 1 unit inserted into the uterine cavity w/in 7 days of the onset of menstruation or immediately after 1st trimester abortion. Postpartum insertions should be postponed until 6 wk after delivery. Patient should be re-examined 4-12 wk after insertion & once a yr thereafter, or more frequently if clinically indicated. In vivo dissoln rate: Initial: 20 mcg/24 hr then 11 mcg/24 hr after 5 yr. Mean dissoln rate: 14 mcg/24 hr up to 5 yr. 1 administration is effective for 5 yr. Known or suspected pregnancy; current or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease; lower genital tract infection; postpartum endometritis; infected abortion during the past 3 mth; cervicitis; cervical dysplasia; uterine or cervical malignancy; undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding; congenital or acquired uterine anomaly including fibroids if they distort the uterine cavity; conditions associated w/ increased susceptibility to infections, acute liver disease or liver tumor. Discontinue treatment in the presence of focal migraine w/ assymetrical visual loss or other symptoms indicating transient cerebral ischemia; exceptionally severe headache, jaundice; marked increase of BP. Hormone-dependent neoplasia including breast cancer, severe arterial disease eg stroke or MI. Diabetics. Women w/ congenital or valvular heart disease at risk of infective endocarditis. Irregular bleedings. Not a method of 1st choice for young nulligravid women or for postmenopausal women w/ advanced uterine atrophy. Not suitable for post-coital contraception. Bleeding changes, benign ovarian cysts. Edema, wt gain, depressive mood, nervousness, mood lability, headache, abdominal & pelvic pain, nausea, acne, back pain, dysmenorrhea, vag discharge, cervicitis, breast tension, mastalgia, expulsion. Primidone, barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin, oxcarbazepine, griseofulvin. Other Contraceptives / Oestrogens, Progesterones & Related Synthetic Drugs G03AC03 - levonorgestrel ; Belongs to the class of progestogens. Used as systemic contraceptives. Rx |
